Chen Bolin is currently an M.Sc. student in the Artificial Intelligence program at the College of Computing and Data Science, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He received his B.Eng. in Software Engineering from Beihang University, China, where he was recognized with the Outstanding Graduate award, Outstanding Thesis award, First Prize in Academic Competitions, and Second Prize in Social Practice. Formerly advised by Professor Menghao Zhang at the School of Software, his previous research primarily focused on Large Language Model (LLM) Systems. His current research interests center on unified sequential modeling and generative recommendation algorithms. Concurrently, he serves as a Recommendation Algorithm Intern at TikTok Shop.

Meet Chen Bolin, a guy currently stationed in Singapore pursuing what he self-deprecatingly calls a “watered-down” Master’s degree, all while successfully cosplaying as a software engineer at a certain unnamed tech giant. Whenever a public holiday rolls around, his primary reflex is to flee the island and travel somewhere else. When he is not running away, he is busy torturing eardrums; he loves singing despite possessing a vocal range where he absolutely cannot hit the high notes and completely bottoms out on the low ones—a true masterclass in “all passion, zero talent.” Recently, he has also tumbled down the expensive rabbit hole of photography, fighting a tragic, uphill battle to make his bulky Nikon produce better shots than a lazy iPhone’s auto-enhance feature. To survive the soul-crushing daily commute, he attempts to look profoundly cultured by burying himself in Japanese literature and film biographies, tackling heavy hitters like “Snow Country,” “The Old Capital,” “The Waltz of Flowers,” “The Temple of the Golden Pavilion,” and Jia Zhangke’s “Jia Xiang” series.
Once upon a time, young Bolin had grand delusions of becoming a theoretical astrophysicist, a dream that was violently crushed in high school when he realized his physics skills were an absolute trainwreck. Since his math was somewhat salvageable, he blindly hopped onto the AI hype train in college and stumbled into Computer Science. His academic journey since then has been a glorious showcase of superficial dabbling: he casually flirted with frontend development, backend development, and computer architecture, mastering absolutely none of them. Miraculously, he has now found a genuine fixation in recommendation algorithms. He is currently actively exploring sequential modeling, generative modeling, and multi-interest modeling. If you are interested in talking tech, exchanging ideas, or just want to watch him pretend he knows exactly what he is doing, he wholeheartedly welcomes you to reach out and discuss!
